BAG YOURSELF AN ETHICAL CHRISTMAS GIFT FROM SEQUEL LONDON
14.10.2010
Online accessories brand, Sequel London, has created a range of bags from recycled leather jackets, discarded silk ties and unwanted curtains, making them an ethical choice of Christmas gift for eco-savvy consumers.
Only available to buy online at www.sequellondon.co.uk, the collection consists of a range of six designs, which are priced from £24 to £59, and offer bespoke, durable styles at high-street prices.
Sequel London was set up by cousins Laura Queening and Claire Baigent to reduce waste and encourage sustainability in fashion. The pair select unwanted clothing from Oxfam’s Wastesaver warehouses, and recycle the material to create contemporary accessories which can be used for another generation.
The aesthetic of the first collection features leather covered button details, and a removable recycled tie decoration, which has been used to add colour and texture to the range. Linings are made from off-cuts of high-quality second-hand curtains, all of which have been donated to Oxfam, and the tie details on each bag are totally unique, to ensure each bag is an individual piece. The whole range is available in black leather, with some styles available in either black or brown.
Sequel London use recycled materials wherever possible, with all swing tickets, packaging and stationary made from recycled paper. The company also aims to reuse whatever materials it can on a day to day basis. All Sequel London accessories are made in London.
All products are designed by Laura Queening, who was awarded Drapers Student Accessories Designer of the Year in 2007, and has worked with designers such as DKNY, Stori Sac and Charlott Vasberg.
Queening said: “We decided to launch Sequel London as a way of encouraging sustainability in fashion, by using those cast-offs that most of us have in the back of our wardrobes, to produce classic, beautiful pieces which can be worn with pride time and again.
“ Consumers are increasingly looking for ethical purchases - particularly at Christmas, which is especially commercial and can be very expensive. With the credit crunch, we have found that people are looking for reusable but stylish products that will last, as opposed to the disposable fashion items that we’ve all become used to in the past few years. ”
In 2008, Queening launched Aura Que, which produces a range of accessories manufactured as part of the Nepal Fair Trade Group to increase ethical production in this developing country.
Claire Baigent graduated from Newcastle University in 2006 with a degree in French and Film Studies, before securing a job with a consumer marketing consultancy, working on a range of high profile national accounts. She holds a CIPR Advanced Certificate in Public Relations.
